Q Gardens - home of the Harwell Cherry

Fruit & Veg

Fruit and veg in our shop

We are the largest fruit farm in Oxfordshire and of course the home to the Harwell cherry. There is a long history of fruit growing in the Harwell area, with records showing fruit production from the early 1500s.  Although there are far fewer acres of fruit orchards than there used to be during the peak of production just after World War Two. In fact we are one of the last remaining orchards in the area. We are currently planting new orchards of cherries and plums so the acreage is slowly increasing again.  The area has a well-deserved reputation for its cherries – as supplied to Winston Churchill – the soil is high in potash which is reputed to be good for flavour development in the fruit.

We grow our own asparagus, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, currants, gooseberries, blackberries, tomatoes, plums, damsons, greengages, apples and pears. As well as our home grown fruit and vegetables we also stock a wide range of other fresh produce from traditional carrots complete with tops and corn on the cob  to brussels sprouts and broccoli grown by our wonderful local growers at Hinton Waldrist and Frilford. Why not pop in for a purple cauliflower?  We also stock all the usual fruit and veg that you would expect to see – even if it comes from overseas – we do our best to source produce from as close as possible but it is impossible to use only British produce – we don’t grow many oranges or lemons in this country!
